What has been the biggest surprise so far?

It’s very beautiful here. Everywhere is very clean. There aren’t as many people here as there are in China.

Have you called your parents since you got here?

Yes, I guess every day. (My mother) will call me or I will call her.

Have you met a lot of people so far?

Yeah. I think Americans are very easygoing. It’s easy to make friends.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you so far this week?

I’ve seen a lot of pretty girls fall over. That was kind of funny.

What are your plans for your first weekend here?

(I’m) probably not even going to be (on campus). Work. Work. Pay for college.

What’s been the biggest surprise so far?

A lot of people handing out free stuff like this (pizza). People, you know, give you stuff all over the place.

Van Ahn: So we thought we were tough the first night and went out with heels on to try and look cute Ö and we demolished our feet.

Did you guys play any ice-breaking games (in your dorm)?

Higley: I played a game with a rubber chicken Ö I’m not a big fan of ice-breakers. They kind of freak me out.

What’s your biggest surprise so far?

Van Ahn: I thought you had to try to gain the “freshman 15,” but, by the looks of it, I’m going to get it in about a week.

Random sophomores Ö my roommates like to dance. They dance a lot.

What are you plans for your first weekend on campus?

My weekend starts today, so I think I’m going to do the frat parties. I’m a good girl, though.

The lack of cute guys my roommate warned me about. I­ think she said I’ll see four a year.­
