Football Pregame: Minnesota vs. No. 8 Cal

Austin Cumblad

It’s the question of the day, the question of the week, maybe the question of the season.  Can the Gophers stop Jahvid Best?  Forget stop, can they at least slow him down?  The Heisman Trophy hopeful is averaging over 10 yards per carry through two games this season and has piled up 281 yards.  The scariest part?  He has yet to play in the fourth quarter.  In the Bears’ 52-13 win over Maryland, Best ran for 137 yards on just 10 carries; a week ago against Eastern Washington, it took him just 17 attempts for 144 yards.  So it’s obvious why slowing, not stopping, is all Minnesota can hope for.  Because with Best comes the Cal offense.

Speaking of offense, the Gophers must be more consistent when they have the ball.  They managed to sneak past Syracuse and Air Force with big fourth quarters, but rest assured, if it takes that long to get the offense churning this week, the game will be well out of reach.  This means quarterback Adam Weber needs to look to receivers other than Eric Decker and the ground game needs to get moving and stay moving.

It’s a gorgeous day for football and we’re nearly ready for kickoff.  This ought to be a good one, check back throughout the game for updates and insight.
