Alcohol procedures to see no major changes

An additional point of sale will be added outside TCF Bank Stadium.

Officials won’t make any major changes to alcohol sale procedures at TCF Bank Stadium for Saturday’s game against Western Michigan.

The Game Day Campus Operations Committee met Wednesday morning to review alcohol as well as other stadium procedures from last week and to make adjustments for this week. This is the first season the committee is discussing alcohol policies, said Scott Ellison, associate athletics director and chair of the group.

Fans bought more than 15,000 servings of beer and wine at last week’s home opener — also the stadium’s first experience serving alcohol to the public. Among the changes, this weekend will be an additional point of sale at the overflow area near Gate A, Ellison said.

A lack of space on the west plaza of the stadium prompted the additional location outside the stadium, Ellison said. It will only accept cash, while the original points of sale will continue accepting both cash and credit cards.

Queues will be adjusted to improve the flow of traffic, and there will be additional signing and staff to direct fans to the points of sale, according to the University’s News Service.

Wait times were six to 12 minutes last week, which Ellison said he was happy with considering the amount of traffic that visited the west plaza.

This Saturday, gates will open at 9 a.m., and beer and wine sales will begin at 10 a.m.

Ellison said no one wound up in the processing center for fan misconduct last Saturday — a first in the four-year history of the stadium. University police reported only four alcohol-related incidents.

The game day committee plans to meet every Wednesday before a home game at TCF Bank Stadium. Created prior to the opening of the stadium, the group is in charge of preparing “everything relating to game day from the curb in,” Ellison said.

Multiple University groups are involved, including police, Parking and Transportation Services, the Office for Student Affairs and Facilities Management.

Ellison also attends Stadium Area Advisory Group meetings to discuss the policies with area neighborhoods. He said he didn’t hear of any complaints about the serving of alcohol last week.
