Miss California, out of touch with America?
Published April 21, 2009
Now I don’t mean to steal the thunder of Kristen Dalton who is this year’s Miss USA from the great state of North Carolina – it’s your year sister! – but there was an even bigger story a’brewing at the 2009 competition and it may offer some cultural commentary aside from the subjugation of women in our society, whodathunk!
It all happened when the infamous celebrity blogger Perez Hilton who sat on the Miss USA question panel last Sunday asked Carrie Prejean of California, whom many expected to win, the question:
"Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?"
to which Prejean responded,
"Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one way or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. You know what, in my country, in my family, I do believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offence to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised and I believe that it should be between a man and a woman. Thank you."
Long story short, Hilton called Prejean a "dumb b****" (not on the show but later on his blog lol) and said it was the worst answer in the history of the competition, comments he later apologized for. The confrontation however led many to speculate that it was Prejean’s position that lead to her loss which has set off a firestorm in the Miss USA world; even the BBC has picked up on it.
