Gibbemeyer leads U.S. to bronze medal at Pan Am Games

The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team won the bronze medal at the Pan American Games by defeating the Dominican Republic 23-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19 on Thursday night in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Former Gophers All-American Lauren Gibbemeyer had 16 points — second-best on Team USA — with 11 kills and five blocks in the win.
A 6-foot-2 middle blocker, Gibbemeyer was one of the team’s top performers throughout the tournament. She played in all 17 sets, totaling 60 points on 36 kills and a team-high 24 blocks while hitting .424.
Team USA lost its only match of the tournament against Cuba in Wednesday afternoon’s semifinals. The Americans fought off three match points to win the third set, but eventually fell 25-17, 25-16, 25-27, 25-21. Gibbemeyer had seven points on five kills and two blocks in the loss.
Ex-Gophers head coach Mike Hebert was an assistant coach for Team USA.
