Men’s hockey pre-game report: Gophers vs. (20) Minn. Duluth

A hard fought back-and-forth game last night ended with the Gophers men’s hockey team receiving zero points.

After staking a 2-0 lead, Minnesota allowed three straight unanswered Minn. Duluth goals to forfeit the lead. A goal early in the third by Nico Sacchetti tied the game at three and sent the game into extra time.

With just 12 seconds remaining in the extra period the Bulldog’s Travis Oleksuk fired a shot from inside the right face-off, giving Minn. Duluth its eighth win of the year.

Minnesota played extremely well early on, with Jordan Schroeder scoring his third goal in as many games. However the Gophers simply couldn’t handle working with a lead, as they allowed a power play goal by Jack Connolly and two more goals in regulation. Overtime saw a total of four shots on net, all by Minn. Duluth. The final shot of the night got past the left shoulder of Kangas for the win.

Gophers Offensive First Line:

Left Wing-Mike Hoeffel

Center-Jordan Schroeder

Right Wing-Nico Sacchetti

Second Line:

Left Wing-Tony Lucia

Center-Patrick White

Right Wing-Zach Budish

Gophers Defensive First Line:

Left-Aaron Ness

Right-David Fischer

Goalie:

Alex Kangas

Notes: The current lineup looks to be the lineup for the foreseeable future, as Lucia has stuck with this current line formation for the past two and a half series.

Minn. Duluth Offensive First Line:

Left Wing-Cody Danberg

Center-Jack Connolly

Right Wing-Mike Connolly

Minn. Duluth Defensive First Line:

Left-Dylan Olsen

Right-Mike Montgomery

Goalie:

Brady Hjelle

Notes: The vaunted Bulldog’s penalty was just 1-6 last night. Jack Connolly scored two goals last night, putting him at nine for the year. Each player on the Bulldog’s first line had at least one point. Tonight Brady Hjelle gets the start in net. The start is expected, as Minn. Duluth has rotated goalies between games in each series thus far.
