TORONTO (AP) — Police opened an arson investigation Thursday after fires broke out at three Toronto churches. Two Roman Catholic churches were damaged and a Protestant church serving mostly blacks was gutted.
The largest fire broke out about 5 a.m. and gutted Christ Church St. James, a British Methodist Episcopal church with a congregation mainly composed of blacks of Caribbean descent.
“This church really was the soul of this community,” said Rosemary Sadler, president of the Black Historical Society.
At noon, fire struck two Roman Catholic churches near each other in Toronto’s Little Italy district.
