Vasiljeva runs down Big Ten cross country honors

Minnesota junior Darja Vasiljeva was named the Big Ten Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.

Vasiljeva won the Iowa State Invitational last Saturday, covering the four-kilometer course in 14 minutes, 22.22 seconds. She led a pack of six Gophers to finish in the top 10 at the unscored event that featured Minnesota, Iowa State and Northern Iowa.

The Gophers are idle this weekend. Minnesota’s next competition is Oct. 19 at the Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, Ind.

Men’s golf

minnesota’s men’s golf team finished eighth Tuesday at the Ping/ Golfweek Preview in Stillwater, Okla.

The Gophers shot a third round 11-over 299 to move up two spots after the first two rounds. They finished 22 shots behind tournament champion Augusta State.

The Preview was played at the par 72, 7,290-yard Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla., the site of the 2003 NCAA Championships.

Individually, the Golden Gophers’ top player was Simon Nash. Nash shot a 76 Tuesday and carded a 5-over-par 221 for the tournament. He finished eight shots behind tournament medalist Emmett Turner of Augusta State.

Senior Wilhelm Schauman and junior Justin Smith each fired a 73 in the final round and finished tied for 16th and 19th respectively. Senior Matt Anderson carded a 77 Tuesday and tied for 51st. Junior David Morgan finished in 72nd place.

Women’s golf

minnesota’s women’s golf team finished eighth at the Shoot-out at the Legends in Franklin, Ind., Tuesday. The Gophers shot rounds of 306-299-308=913 to finish 25 shots behind tournament champion Kent State.

Individually, Minnesota was led by Terra Petsinger who carded a 4-over-par 220 and a career-best fourth-place finish. Senior Karyn Stordahl tied for seventh at 5-over 221 after firing a even-par 72 today. Junior Katie Jacoboson tied for 36th at 17-over 233. Freshman Sarah Butler tied for 78th after carding a 77 in the final round.

Men’s tennis

minnesota men’s tennis player Thomas Haug advanced to the Round of 32 at the ITA All-American Championship Qualifying in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Haug defeated TCU’s Fabrizio Sestini, 6-3, 6-3. He will face Daniel Langre of Southern California on Wednesday.

Junior Aleksey Zharinov will compete in the main draw of the tournament which runs through the weekend.

Men’s cross country

minnesota’s men’s cross country team moved up one place in the latest MONDO cross country poll to No. 13.The Gophers remain the top-ranked team in the Midwest Region and are one of four Big Ten teams in the top-20.
