Gopher Roundup

Gophers track coach Phil Lundin announced seniors Steve Burkholder, Tom Gerding and Ben Meyer as the team captains for the 2001 season.
All three athletes own school records in their primary events; Burkholder in the 100-meter dash, Gerding in the 400-meter dash and Meyer in the weight throw.
Burkholder finished second in the 100-meter dash at the 1999 Big Ten outdoor championship.
Gerding ran to a top finish at the 400-meter dash at the 1999 outdoor conference meet. Following his appearance at the NCAA outdoor track meet, Gerding was the first Minnesota sprinter to be named All-American.
Meyer, though not a Big Ten champion, has placed twice at Big Ten meets in the weight throw (indoor) and hammer throw (outdoor).
The Gophers get the 2001 indoor season underway on January 13 at the University Fieldhouse.

Schauman named top golfer
University golfer Wilhelm Schauman was named Golf World’s Men’s Collegiate Player of the Week in the publication’s Sept. 29th issue.
The sophomore from Djursholm, Sweden, won back-to-back events last weekend, leading the Gophers to a pair of team titles. He has shot par or lower in eight of his last nine rounds, going back to last season’s NCAA championships.
Minnesota placed first at the invitational in Dellwood, Minn. and the Wolverine Invitational at the University of Michigan.
