Four men, four women headed to NCAA championships

Eight Gophers qualified for the NCAA Track and Field championships next week in Eugene, Ore.

Though the spring semester has ended and summer has begun for many, the Gophers menâÄôs track and field team is still hard at work. Having just completed the NCAA West Preliminary round in Austin, Texas, four Minnesota athletes will be representing the team at the NCAA championships. Athletes who qualified for the tournament are Chris Rombough , Ben Blankenship , R.J. McGinnis and Matt Fisher . Rombough (5,000-meter run) and Blankenship (1,500) are two of the schoolâÄôs elite distance runners. McGinnis will compete in the decathlon after winning the event at the Big Ten tournament. Fisher is set to compete in the high jump. The NCAA outdoor championships are scheduled for June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore. Women The womenâÄôs championships are scheduled for the same time and location, and Minnesota will be sending four athletes. Gabriele Anderson and Nikki Swenson will be competing in the 1,500-meter run, after qualifying on the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary round. Joining them will be thrower Nikki Tzanakis in the discus and distance runner Megan Duwell in the 10K. Duwell is a two-time Big Ten champion in the event.
