Charges filed in campus shooting

A 16-year-old was charged with two counts of aggravated robbery in connection to a Jan. 25 string of crimes on campus.

A 16-year-old was charged with two counts of aggravated robbery in connection to a Jan. 25 string of crimes on campus. Derrell Jacori Cole was arrested Wednesday night by Minneapolis police. He was apprehended at his home in north Minneapolis after failing to appear in court on unrelated charges. The two counts stem from the Moos Tower robberies that preceded the shooting of a University of Minnesota student outside Centennial Hall. Police also took a 21-year-old into custody on Tuesday night at his home on the 1500 block of Morgan Avenue North, according to a police report. The 36-hour window police had to charge him was extended until 4 p.m. Friday, but the expected aggravated robbery charges did not materialize. Police released the 21-year-old Friday. The charges are connected to a cluster of crimes that occurred on the East Bank, culminating with the shooting of first-year student Timothy Schumacher outside Centennial Hall. Police allege the men robbed a woman on the 500 block of Huron Boulevard Southeast then demanded cell phones and backpacks from two women outside of Moos Tower. They then proceeded to the superblock, where one man allegedly shot Schumacher before they fled in a car located between Centennial and Territorial halls. University police believe both men were involved in the robberies and have placed Cole at the scene of the shooting. Police tracked the suspects after the shooting through GPS technology in one of the victimsâÄô cell phones. University cameras were used to establish a timeline of the events but have not helped police identify the suspects. In addition, cameras recorded a car driving erratically, believed to be driven by the fleeing suspects. Police are still searching for a third man, the driver, and anyone else involved. Police previously suspected the two men were also part of a larger crime spree that happened in south Minneapolis earlier that night. They no longer believe the crimes are connected.
