Gymnasts Strother, Alvarez named All-Big Ten

Women’s gymnastics; Men’s golf

Senior men’s gymnast Clay Strother and sophomore Guillermo Alvarez have been named to the 2003 All-Big Ten Team.

Strother was named All-Big Ten on floor exercise and as an all-around performer. The Jasper, Texas, native was an All-Big Ten selection last season and earned Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors twice in 2003.

He won the floor exercise title at the Big Ten Championships last weekend and is currently the top-ranked gymnast in the nation on floor exercise (9.617 average) and vault (9.467 average). Strother is also the third-ranked all-around performer with an NCAA average score of 53.942.

Alvarez was named All-Big Ten for the second consecutive season as an all-around performer. The Denver, Colo., native was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2002. Alvarez followed his tremendous freshman campaign by being named the Big Ten gymnast of the week a conference-high three times. Alvarez is ranked second in the nation on floor exercise (9.567 average) and is fifth in the all-around rankings with an average score of 53.833.

Women’s gymnastics

The NCAA announced Tuesday the pairings for the upcoming NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Regional Championships and has placed the University of Minnesota in the North Central Region in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Gophers will compete in the regional Saturday, April 12.

The Gophers are joined by eighth-ranked Utah, the host school, No. 6 Stanford, No. 18 California, No. 20 Brigham Young and No. 21 Denver. Of the six regionals, the North Central Region is the only region in the nation in which all six teams are ranked in the top 25.

Men’s golf

The 12th-ranked University of Minnesota men’s golf team tied for ninth place Tuesday at the National Invitational Tournament with a team total of 895 (+31). The Gophers carded rounds of 302-289-309 to tie with Washington and finish 25 strokes back from Arizona, the event champion.

The Invitational was held at the par 72, 7,138-yard Tucson National Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz.

Minnesota’s top finisher was senior Matt Anderson, who shot a final round of 2-over 74 for a total of 218 (+2) to tie for 10th place. Fellow seniors Wilhelm Schauman tied for 28th with an event score of 224 (+8), while Simon Nash tied for 54th with 230 (+14).

Junior Ben Greve finished 15-over at 231 to place 58th. Junior Justin Smith fell to 61st place with a total of 232 (+16).

The Gophers will next be in action Apr. 12-13 at The Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill, N.C.
