Gophers women’s hockey upset by Bemidji State

Senior Erin Cody scored early in the first period and added an empty-net goal late in the third as Bemidji State (7-6-2, 5-4-2 WCHA) defeated Minnesota (10-6-0, 5-6-0 WCHA) 2-0 Friday afternoon.

BSU goalie Zuzana Tomcikova, last year’s WCHA co-player of the year, stopped all 29 shots she faced, holding the Gophers scoreless for the first time since Nov. 6.

Minnesota goalie Noora Raty kept the Gophers in the game for the majority of the contest, stopping 30 of the 31 shots she faced, but the Minnesota offense sputtered for most of the afternoon.

The Gophers played one of their cleanest games all year, drawing only three penalties, but didn’t convert on any of their three power-play chances.

The loss for the Gophers marks only their third in 49 meetings against BSU and their first against the Beavers since 2007.

The Gophers look to move back into a tie for fifth in the WCHA against BSU tomorrow at 2:00 P.M.
