Re-elect Ellison for Congress

The 5th District congressional incumbent will do his best to represent the University.

Since 2007, Keith Ellison, D-Minn., has been our voice in the U.S. House of Representatives. Though his opponent, Chris Fields, honorably worked abroad in the Marine Corps for 21 years and later moved to the Twin Cities, Ellison has had a long relationship with the community he represents. Ellison’s commitment to solving the problems of his district originated in his empathy and experience fighting in the trenches of our community and state Legislature. As a University of Minnesota Law School alumnus, Ellison is aware of the issues involving student life and is actively working to improve the University community by taking the problems of the education gap, human and civil rights abuses and a low minimum wage head-on.

Ellison was recognized nationally for his work in revising the housing market when he authored the Protecting Tenants in Foreclosure Act, which requires banks and other new owners to provide at least 90 days’ notice of eviction to renters occupying foreclosed homes. Ellison champions efforts to give power to those traditionally without it, which is particularly important in an election year involving two amendments that may inappropriately redistribute power away from minority demographics.

Though his campaign has not been without controversy, such as the poor language used against his opponent during a recent debate, Ellison’s legislative record proves he is the best candidate for our district. Fields is worthy of praise for his effort as a recent resident to help our community, but it is with Ellison that our best interests are represented.
