Buergis-Reddy finish second at Leary Invitational

Minnesota’s women’s tennis doubles duo of Angela Buergis and Nischela Reddy took second place Sunday at the 7th annual Cissie Leary Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa. The sixth-seeded Minnesota team upset the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds along the way, but fell to No. 2 seed Ivanov/Smekodub of Tulane, 8-6, in the championship match.

In singles action, Buergis went 2-1, losing in the quarterfinals, while Reddy posted a 2-2 mark, falling to Harvard’s Preethi Mukundan, 6-4, 6-3, Sunday in the consolation semifinals.

The Gophers are next in action at the All-American Championship in Los Angeles, Calif. The significant early-season tournament kicks off Oct. 6.

National audience

Minnesota’s upcoming football games against both Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., this Saturday at 11 a.m., and Michigan at the Metrodome on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m., will be televised by one of the ESPN networks.

The Gophers’ game against Northwestern will appear either on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPN Plus. It is yet to be determined which of those networks will carry the game, because of ESPN’s coverage of the Major League Baseball playoffs. The Gophers’ game against Michigan will be televised by ESPN. The Gophers will also appear on one of the ESPN networks later this season when they travel to Champaign, Ill., for an 11 a.m. kickoff against Illinois on Oct. 25.
