Unpopular Opinion: I didn’t like the first episode of “Master of None”

I love Aziz Ansari. I loved him on “Parks and Recreation,” I love his standup and from his appearances on Jimmy Fallon, he seems like a great guy. With my love for Ansari, I was excited for his new Netflix original series, “Master of None.”

After I watched the first episode, though, I was underwhelmed.

The episode felt forced and awkward. I was expecting Ansari’s usual upbeat and witty humor but instead it was immature and fell flat. For the most part, I found the two children on the show, both under the age of 8, the funniest part of the episode.

Ansari’s best friends on the show, played by Eric Wareheim and Lena Waithe, were charming but the friendships seemed unlikely and random.

I am not giving up on the show that the New York Times called “the year’s best comedy straight out of the gate,” though.

I truly hope that Ansari will redeem himself in the next nine episodes and I haven’t given up all hope yet.
