Intermat Wrestling released its preseason NCAA Division I team and individual rankings on Wednesday – lists featuring a strong contingent of Minnesota grapplers.
The defending national champion Gophers are rated No. 1 in the team rankings, while six individual wrestlers are in the top three of their respective weight class: Leroy Vega (2nd, 125 pounds), Luke Becker (3rd, 157), Jacob Volkmann (3rd, 174), Damion Hahn (3rd, 184), Owen Elzen (2nd, 197) and Garrett Lowney (3rd, heavyweight).
Women’s hockey seventh
Minnesota’s women’s hockey team is ranked seventh in the current USA Today/American Hockey Magazine.
Defending champion Minnesota-Duluth is No. 1, and Wisconsin is fourth, giving the WCHA-Women’s League three teams in the poll.
The Gophers (2-0-0) play the Bulldogs (2-0-0) in a series this weekend at Duluth.
Eggum competes at
championships
Former Minnesota wrestler Brandon Eggum will compete for the United States at the 2001 World Freestyle Championships of Wrestling in Sofia, Bulgaria, Nov. 22-25.
Eggum was added after Iowa State’s Cael Sanderson withdrew from the event. Gophers heavyweight Garrett Lowney also chose not to compete.
Open hoops scrimmage Saturday
Minnesota’s men’s basketball team will hold an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 20, at Williams Arena.
The free scrimmage starts at 3 p.m., and is open to the public. Police officers, firefighters and Red Cross representatives will be on hand to accept donations for victims of the Sept. 11 tragedies.
