The Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Coalition will host a Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, procession Saturday to remember the lives of deceased immigrants. The event plans to commemorate the deaths of thousands of men, women and children who died crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, those who have died in detention and those who have been victims of hate crimes, according to a news release from MIRAC. The U.S. Border Patrol estimates that 1, 954 people died crossing the border between 1998 and 2004, according to the release. Spanish and global studies senior Emily Smith, who interns for MIRAC, said the La Raza student group on campus has helped advertise the event to students. The procession will begin at 1 p.m. at the St. Rosario church located at 24th Street and 18th Avenue in Minneapolis and will end at 38th Street and 17th Avenue in Minneapolis. Smith said following the procession there will be a traditional Day of the Dead altar, music and speakers, and she hopes university students will take part in the event. âÄúWe need to build a bridge with the Minneapolis community and immigration is a big part of that,âÄù she said.
