Masked robbers cornered graduate student Evan Henke between 14th and 15th avenues Southeast, on Fifth Street Southeast, flashed a gun and took HenkeâÄôs wallet before riding away Thursday night, according to a police report. He said he thought he was safe because he could see Burrito Loco, but then one hooded cyclist cut him off, and the other stopped behind him, leaving him no exit route. The cyclist in front said through the blue bandana across his face, âÄúYou have a dollar?âÄù Henke , en route to hang out with friends, said he did have money, and then he asked them why they wanted to know. Then the cyclist pulled a hand gun from the pouch of his black hooded sweatshirt and said, âÄúIâÄôm asking for your money,âÄù Henke said. Because Henke knew he only had $15 in his wallet, he said he wasnâÄôt about to argue with the robbers; instead he asked if he could take his driverâÄôs license out of his wallet, which the masked cyclists agreed to let him do. âÄúIt is a little unnerving to know that there are people in the area willing to coerce you at gunpoint,âÄù Henke said. Police are investigating the case. Free Gas An armed robber forced a SuperAmerica employee to give them money early Sunday morning. According to a police report, gas station worker Ian Halverson was held up while he was trying to open the store, located on University Avenue near the border between St. Paul and Minneapolis. Store manager Amy Hagen declined to comment. In the UniversityâÄôs underbelly The University Department of Central Security caught at least two people on film Nov. 2 breaking a grate and sneaking around in the vast underground University steam tunnels. Saturday, a deep-tunnel foreman reported damage done by the trespassers while they were in the tunnels, according to a police report. According to the report, the burglars opened the grate located on Church Street and explored the tunnels before police were called and they escaped. University police Deputy Chief Chuck Miner said the tunnels house utility pipes and lines that provide heat, electricity and high-speed Internet to the UniversityâÄôs East and West Banks . Though there is more than one entrance, they are kept secret, Miner said. âÄú[We donâÄôt] want to give details about where theyâÄôre at,âÄù he said. âÄúWe have a hard enough time keeping people out of those.âÄù Stevan Frisk , an operations facility manager, said Central Security declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
