I’m the mother of an 18-year-old son with autism. I want to show my support for Minnesota’s decision to hire more people with disabilities. It is important to give them more opportunities since they are subjected to the biases of employers.
People with disabilities have a lot to offer if they are given a chance. My son worked at the local library through his Individualized Education Program this summer and did an excellent job. Nevertheless, I am concerned whether he will get employed in the future without assistance, due to the biases.
All I am hoping for is for employers to open the door a little wider and give them a chance to show what they can do. As a recent Minnesota Daily article noted, some in society are afraid to hire people with disabilities because they are not “familiar” with them. I think that Minnesota’s decision will help society become more familiar with people who have disabilities.
