Banham drafted by Connecticut Suns

Rachel Banham's professional career is underway.

The guard was taken fourth overall by the Connecticut Sun in the 2016 WNBA Draft on Thursday night, and was the first player not from the University of Connecticut off the board. The selection also carried a piece of historical symmetry, as former Gophers guard Lindsay Whalen was taken fourth overall by the Sun in 2004.

Banham is the second Minnesota player to be taken with a top-five pick in the last two years, after center Amanda Zahui B. was selected No. 2 overall by the Tulsa Shock in 2015.

"Thanks everyone for the love tonight!! Can't wait to being my pro career with the Connecticut Sun!" Banham tweeted Thursday night.

The Sun finished with a record of 15-19, the worst in the WNBA's Eastern Conference in 2015. The team also had the third overall pick and selected Morgan Tuck of Connecticut.

WNBA training camp begins on April 24 and the season will open May 14.
