VIENNA, Austria (AP) — A streetcar carriage crashed through bricks and glass into a bank today, killing one person and injuring 48.
The streetcar derailed at a busy Vienna intersection after the driver failed to notice a wrongly positioned rail switch at a junction.
The second car catapulted into the bank and apparently ran over a 19-year-old bank employee identified only as Michael C.
The other casualties were either on the streetcar or in the bank, Red Cross worker Peter Hoffelner said, and most suffered “fairly serious or serious” injuries. The driver was being treated for shock.
A gaping hole remained in the side of the building. Fire crews were called in for clean-up.
The lead car, which also derailed, caused no damage.
