Four Gophers skaters see action in Four Nations Cup

Juniors Anne Schleper and Sarah Erickson and sophomores Noora Raty and Mira Jalosuo respresented the Gophers at the Four Nations Cup women’s hockey tournament this past weekend.

Schleper and Erickson were part of an American team that had eleven olympians on the roster. They both played in all four games, but neither recorded a point; The American team took second in the event, losing the championship 3-2 to Canada.

Freshman Amanda Kessel was also selected for the U.S. team but was unable to make the trip due to injury.

Jalosuo and Raty played for the Finnish national team, which finished third.  Raty played 80 minutes in the tournament, notching a shutout in her only complete game against Sweden and allowing three goals in the first period of Finland’s 15-0 loss against Canada.  Jalosuo saw time in each of Finland’s games but didn’t record a point.

The annual tournament, held between Canada, the United States, Finland, and Sweeden, has traditionally been dominated by the Canadians, who have now won 12 of the 15 tournament titles.

The Gophers (6-5-0, 3-5-0 WCHA) were idle this past weekend but fell to sixth in the WCHA standings, as Minnesota State and Bemidji State swept Ohio State and North Dakota respectively. They travel to Minnesota State this weekend.
