University Police Sgt. Joe May’s retirement is one of several adjustments taking place at the department within the next few months. Sgt. Jo Anne Benson, a member of the force since 1981, will succeed May as head of the investigation unit.
The department also inaugurated four new police officers Friday. Officer Erik Swanson has been promoted to sergeant and will supervise officers patrolling campus.
Officer Robert “Hawk” Hanley, a 29-year veteran with the University Police, will retire alongside May on Jan. 31. Captain Bruce Troupe is scheduled to leave the department in April.
“This isn’t just a slow passing of the torch when just one person is leaving,” Swanson said. “This is a huge change for the department — a severe change.”
Swanson said only time can tell how the new department will operate, but he said the energy and excitement level of the new officers is high. He said in the next five years, the majority of officers will be in their 20s.
