Goals from Kolander lead Gophers past Santa Clara

The Gophers bounced back from a Friday loss to Stanford with a 2-1 win over Santa Clara.

The No. 10 Gophers topped Santa Clara 2-1 on Sunday.

Senior forward Simone Kolander scored both goals for the Gophers in their victory.

Minnesota was awarded a penalty kick in the 5th minute of the game and Kolander took the chance to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead .

Santa Clara struck back in the 33rd minute with a goal from Jordan Jesolva assisted by Natalie Kennedy .The match was tied going into halftime .

There were four yellow cards given out in five minutes in the second half. Each team received two including junior defender and forward Maddie Gaffney and senior defender Rashida Beal for the Gophers.

Kolander gave Minnesota the lead once again in the 70th minute on a goal assisted by senior midfielder Josee Stiever . Kolander is now leading the team in goals this season with seven.

Minnesota tried to keep the majority of the possession and add another goal after taking the lead in the second half, but the score remained 2-1 for a Gophers victory.
