Three Minnesota swimmers make 2013 World University Games

Three Gophers swimmers will compete at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia, next summer from July 10-16.

On the men's side, juniors Derek Toomey and Kyler Van Swol earned spots on the USA Swimming roster after their performances at the 2012 U.S. Open Championships in August. Toomey will swim in two events, the 50-meter freestyle and the 4×100 freestyle relay. Van Swol will compete in the 100 butterfly.

Recently graduated Ashley Steenvoorden will also represent the women's team at the Games in the 800 freestyle.

In all, 39 college swimmers will travel to the Games. The International Sports Federation holds the event every two years for athletes aged 17 to 28.
