Research center receives grants for two studies

The Roy Wilkins Center for Human Relations and Social Justice received two federal grants worth $170,000 to study child abuse and domestic violence.
The National Institute of Justice, a division of the U.S. Department of Justice, awarded the grants earlier this month. The first grant of $50,000 will fund a research project designed to study the impact of childhood abuse on adolescents and domestic violence.
The second grant, worth $120,000, will finance a study designed to determine whether there are connections between welfare recipiency and domestic violence.
Professors Sheila Ards and Samuel L. Myers Jr., both of the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, will head up the studies.
Myers serves as director of the Wilkins center. Ards, on leave from the University, is currently vice president for community development and director of the Center of Excellence at Benedict College in South Carolina.
