Fargo officials want more volunteers

FARGO, N.D. (AP) âÄî Fargo officials have put out a call for volunteers to help with dike building to hold back the rising Red River. The National Weather Service says heavy rain is expected over the next several days. Fargo’s administrator, Pat Zavoral, says the city has 310,000 sandbags filled, but he says that’s a long way from the 1.5 million sandbags that are needed. The city has set up Sandbag Central, where machines fill sandbags round the clock. City officials say they’re especially short volunteers in the evening and overnight hours. They say at least 150 volunteers are needed for the sandbag-filling machines to run continuously. The city says volunteers at night can park at the Fargodome and be bused to Sandbag Central.
