Cross Country to compete at Oz Memorial Saturday

The Gophers men’s and women’s cross country teams will be competing at the Oz Memorial this Friday, Sept. 11.

Named after former Drake coach Gary Osborn who passed away in 2000, the 10th annual Oz Memorial is a six-kilometer race that has in recent history been dominated by the Minnesota women.

The Gophers women’s team has won the previous four team titles at the Oz Memorial, and will return All-American Megan Duwell, who is the defending individual champion at the meet.

The men’s side will be sending a partial team to compete in the Oz. Some of their top runners, including junior Hassan Mead, will not run in the event, and will instead make their season debut Sept. 26 at the Roy Griak Invitational. One of the reasons the men’s team is sending only some of their roster to compete is the distance of the Oz meet. While the Oz is a six-kilometer race, the rest of the men’s regular season meet’s are eight-kilometers.

Other schools competing at the Oz Memorial include Drake, North Dakota State, South Dakota State and Minnesota State Mankato. The meet will be at Les Bolstad Golf Course, with the women starting at 5:00 p.m., and the men beginning at 5:45 p.m.
