U, Mpls. to announce bike-sharing program

Officials to announce bike-sharing program Tuesday.

University of Minnesota and Minneapolis officials plan to announce two bicycle projects on campus Tuesday, including a bicycle center in the Oak Street Parking Ramp and a bicycle-sharing program slated to bring bikes to campus, uptown and downtown Minneapolis by spring. Transit for Livable Communities will announce these and four other Bike Walk Twin Cities projects that are funded by more than $4 million federal dollars to increase walking and biking in the Twin Cities. Officials will also demonstrate Radio Frequency I.D. technology, which will act as a tag for bicycles that are stolen, and be used to track bicycle commuters. The event takes place at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Oak Street Parking Ramp, and will feature University President Bob Bruininks and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak. Check online tomorrow for coverage of the story.
