Minnesota soccer player Kaitlin Neary was released from the Hennepin County Medical Center on Tuesday evening, one day after being struck by a vehicle near the Bierman athletics complex.

Neary suffered a broken collarbone and a right leg contusion after a 1989 Ford Bronco hit her on the corner of 15th Avenue Southeast and Fifth Street Southeast at approximately 4:30 p.m. Monday.

According to the police report, the driver of the vehicle was the 17-year-old brother of a Minnesota women’s hockey player.

The male was cited by officers at the scene for failure to yield.

“(Neary is) taking it extremely well,” coach Barbara Wickstrand said. “She is starting to move around a little bit.”

While the entire team has been supportive, Neary’s family is on the way from their hometown of Tacoma, Wash.

Jane Neary, Kaitlin’s mother, is scheduled to arrive in town today. Her father, Mike Neary, will arrive Friday.

As for the players, many were stunned at news of the accident.

“It is shocking,” captain Amanda McMahon said. “We were all getting excited for the Big Ten opener and then this happens.”

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Web site, a broken collarbone takes about four to eight weeks to heal, leaving Neary’s season in doubt.
