Leopold and Martin to skate for U.S. in Austria

Former Minnesota men’s hockey defensemen Jordan Leopold and Paul Martin were named to the U.S. National Team that will compete at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships on April 30 – May 15 in Austria.

Leopold won the Hobey Baker Award, honoring the top player in the nation, as a senior in 2002 and is a two-time first-team All-American. He holds the school record for goals by a defenseman with 45, and he will be skating in his third IIHF World Championships.

Leopold scored 144 points in 164 career games with the Gophers. He signed with the NHL’s Calgary Flames after his senior season and played in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004.

Martin was a second-team All-American in his junior season of 2003 before leaving school early to play for the New Jersey Devils. He played for Team USA at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the 2004 Deutschland Cup.

Martin scored 97 points in 127 career games in college. He played 70 games with the Devils in 2003-04, tallying six goals and 18 assists.
