Monsoon floods hit millions in India, Bangladesh

LUCKNOW, India (AP) — Torrential rains swelled rivers and swept 14 villagers to their deaths in two flood-ravaged states in eastern India over the weekend, officials said Sunday.
Four people died Sunday in Bihar state, where rivers fed by monsoon rains have affected 9 million people in 6,000 villages, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.
On Saturday night, at least 10 people were killed after being caught in the gushing waters of a swollen river in neighboring Uttar Pradesh state, officials said. The region is 400 miles east of New Delhi.
In the past month, at least 399 people have been killed by flooding in the two regions, flood officials said.
Nearly 335,000 people have been left homeless in Uttar Pradesh, where the military was helping in the rescue effort, local officials said.
Monsoon rains are expected to continue in many parts of India.
Meanwhile, flooding and flood-related disease in neighboring Bangladesh killed at least 11 people Saturday as authorities battled to provide medicine, food, and water to some 20 million affected people. Nine of the victims drowned and two died of diarrhea.
Diarrhea and viral fever have struck 74,000 people in Bangladesh, disaster officials said Sunday.
