Gibbemeyer and Hebert win Pan Am Games opener

Former Gophers volleyball star Lauren Gibbemeyer and retired head coach Mike Hebert joined forces again Saturday as the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team won its opening match at the XVI Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Gibbemeyer, one of 12 players on the United States’ roster, had four kills and a match-high six blocks as the United States defeated Puerto Rico, 25-17, 25-18, 25-14. Gibbemeyer was a two-time All-American during her four-year career with Minnesota (2007-2010) and holds the program record for most career blocks.

Hebert is an assistant coach on the team. He led the Gophers to three Final Four appearances during his 15-year tenure (1996-2010) with Minnesota.

The United States play again Sunday at 1 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m. A full schedule and roster can be found here.
