Gophers men’s basketball moves up in polls

The Gophers men’s basketball team moved up two spots in both the AP and coaches’ polls released on Monday.

Minnesota (3-0) is ranked No. 22 in the AP poll and is tied with Louisville for No. 16 in the coaches’ poll. It is the highest ranking the Gophers have achieved in the coaches’ poll in the last 10 seasons.

Five other Big Ten teams are ranked in both polls, including Michigan State (No. 2 AP, No. 2 coaches), No. 6/6 Purdue, No. 15/15 Michigan, No. 17/18 Ohio State and No. 20/21 Illinois.  The Big East has the most teams (seven) ranked in the AP poll, and is tied with the Big Ten for most ranked in the coaches’ poll.

The Gophers won their first three games by at least 25 points each against Tennessee Tech, Stephen F. Austin and Utah Valley at Williams Arena.

Minnesota will face its first ranked opponent, No. 12/10 Butler (2-0), in the 76 Classic that starts Thursday in Anaheim, Calif.  No. 8/8 West Virginia (1-0) and No. 19/19 Clemson (3-0) are also in the tournament’s eight-team field.
