Tiller looking for some help from a foe

Purdue football head coach Joe Tiller is doing all right. He just tied Jack Mollenkopf for most wins in school history with 84 , and heâÄôs retiring after the 2008 season. So at a Tuesday press conference the week before his team is scheduled to host No. 16 Oregon, what does he do? He jokes. TillerâÄôs answers to a number of questions prompted chuckles as he repeatedly talked up the DucksâÄô speed and talent. Tiller said he scheduled the game when his longtime friend Bill Moos was still the athletics director at Oregon . He also said it was when the Ducks were not quite the caliber that they are now. âÄúCoach [Mike] Bellotti elevated the program a little bit higher than I anticipated,âÄù Tiller said. Fortunately, Tiller has an obvious solution to level the playing field. âÄúI think [Bellotti] should loan us at least four players,âÄù he said. âÄúI think that should be the trade-off. Two on offense and two on defense, and he could even pick the two on either side he wanted to give us âÄî it wouldnâÄôt matter.âÄù He also has a solution for stopping OregonâÄôs top-ranked offense thatâÄôs averaging 597.5 yards per game. âÄúIf Coach Bellotti will agree to allow us to play 12 men versus their 11,âÄù Tiller said. âÄúOutside of that, I don’t have any answers.âÄù Well, thatâÄôs not entirely true. How good are OregonâÄôs four starting defensive backs? âÄúTwo of them are All-World and two of them are All-American,âÄù Tiller said. Big Ten goes 11-0 Last Saturday was a perfect day for the Big Ten. All 11 teams played. All 11 teams won. Add another line to the history books. But it wasnâÄôt the conferenceâÄôs first perfect week. In 2006 the Big Ten won all 11 of its opening weekend matchups, but two of the wins came Thursday while the other nine victories took place Saturday. To say the Big Ten dominated its opponents is an understatement. The average margin of victory was 26.6 points, and eight schools scored more than 40 points . Granted, only Penn State played a BCS opponent âÄî an 0-2 Oregon State team that appears to be headed for a long year in the Pac-10. And Ohio State sweated it out for a 26-14 win over Ohio, a team that usually acts as a punching bag for the Buckeyes . Still, every school found a way to win; doing so next week may prove more difficult. With Indiana off, 11 Big Ten wins this weekend is impossible. But rest assured, people will be talking if the conference manages to go 10-0. On Saturday, No. 5 Ohio State heads to Los Angeles for its highly touted matchup against top-ranked USC, 10th-ranked Wisconsin plays an emerging Fresno State team that currently sits at No. 21 in the polls and Purdue hosts No. 16 Oregon. Wells healthy for USC Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel confirmed Tuesday during his weekly teleconference that running back Chris âÄúBeanieâÄù Wells will be on the field Saturday for the Buckeyes when they face top-ranked USC. Tressel said how much Wells sees of the ball Saturday will depend on how his workouts go during the week, but he was encouraged so far. âÄúBased on what I saw [Monday], he was running well,âÄù Tressel said.
