Six-match win streak helps spikers reach No. 13 in polls

Minnesota’s volleyball team moved up seven spots to No. 13 in Monday’s USA Today/AVCA Top 25. The Gophers ranking is their highest since the 2000 season when they finished No. 11 in the final poll.

Minnesota, who was ranked No. 20 last week, finished 2-1 in the Diet Coke Classic which it hosted at the Sports Pavilion last weekend. The Gophers defeated then No. 7 UCLA and Rhode Island, and lost to then No. 9 Northern Iowa.

Minnesota’s win over UCLA was the highest ranked opponent it had defeated since the Gophers knocked off No. 5 UC Santa Barbara in the NCAA Tournament on Dec. 5, 1993.

The Big Ten boasts five teams ranked in the Top 25 this week. The conference also features four teams among the top 13 in the nation.

In remaining non-conference matchups, Minnesota hosts No. 20 North Carolina on Sept. 14 in the Nike Classic and plays No. 22 Santa Clara at the Denver Tournament on Sept. 21.
