Gophers advance to NCAA title game with OT victory

Minnesota won its second overtime game in a row, beating Boston College 3-2 in the Frozen Four semifinals.

The Gophers women’s hockey team beat Boston College 3-2 in overtime Friday to advance to the NCAA championship game and extend its record winning streak to 48 games.

Junior Sarah Davis scored the game-winning goal 99 seconds into overtime. A week ago in the NCAA regional, the Gophers (40-0-0) needed three overtimes to beat North Dakota 3-2.

Minnesota responded to a 1-0 deficit after two periods Friday by dominating the third period. The Gophers scored 102 seconds into the third and added a goal 10 and a half minutes later to take the lead.

A defensive breakdown allowed Boston College its second goal late in the third period, but Minnesota controlled play the rest of the game.

“When we need a goal, we get one,” Gophers head coach Brad Frost said. “[The] team found a way, as they have all year.”

Minnesota will play Sunday’s title game against Boston University, which beat Mercyhurst 4-1 in Friday’s other semifinal.
