After just earning his 100th career point this past weekend, senior forward Jay Barriball is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season with a knee injury sustained during this weeks practice.
The injury occurred Tuesday during what head coach Don Lucia deemed "a routine drill that you do every week or a couple times a week; guys just ran into each other."
Barriball injured his knee in the collision, and has an MRI scheduled for later today. Lucia said in his weekly press conference that if the injury is as serious as is expected, Barriball will undergo surgery this Friday, shelving him for at least four months.
"He’s down, as you can imagine," Lucia said. "You’re a senior, and you want to have a great senior year. The injury, which prevents you from playing this year, but [also] then you got to go through the rehab, that’s the hard part; it’s disappointing for any guy."
The injury is the second major blow to the Gophers squad in the past week. Freshman defenseman Nick Leddy broke his jaw during the Friday night game against Alaska Anchorage, when he was hit following a shot attempt from the blue line and is expected to miss six weeks. As to who will replace Barriball on the depth chart Lucia did not committ to any one person right now, saying multiple players would have to step up.
