On Wisconsin's first offensive play of the game running back James White broke multiple tackles en route to a 49-yard scamper, but the Gophers' defense rebounded in a big way.
Minnesota held the Badgers to just a field goal on the drive after superb open-field tackles. A few possessions later, the Gophers pressured Wisconsin quarterback Joel Stave into a rushed throw that culminated in an interception. Aaron Hill picked off the pass and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown.
It wasn't the first time the senior has made a huge defensive play for Minnesota this season. Three weeks ago at Indiana, Hill recovered a fumble with less than a minute remaining to clinch the Gophers win. In week two at New Mexico State, Hill recovered a fumble and ran it back for a touchdown.
Minnesota's defense also made a huge stop at the end of the half that held Wisconsin to a field goal despite getting into the red zone.
Cobb running the offense
Gophers running back David Cobb has 52 rushing yards, needing just six more for 1,000 yards on the season. The last Minnesota player to rush for 1,000-plus yards in a season was Amir Pinnix in 2006.
Cobb also has a nine-yard reception, giving him 61 of Minnesota's 94 yards of total offense.
Engel missed
Wide receiver Derrick Engel reportedly tore his ACL last Sunday at practice. He is not playing Saturday, but suited up and gingerly jogged out of the tunnel pre-game for senior day.
Without Engel, Minnesota's had to rely more on freshman receivers Drew Wolitarsky and Donovahn Jones. Both players dropped catchable passes on third down that forced the Gophers to punt. Neither Jones or Wolitarsky have a reception and Minnesota only has three completions for 25 passing yards.
That being said, stout defense and a potent run attack are keeping the Gophers in the game.
