Briggs, Nichols, McCarville honored

Minnesota men’s hockey freshman goaltender Kellen Briggs has been named the WCHA rookie of the week following his performance last weekend during Minnesota’s showing at the College Hockey Showcase. Briggs picked up both wins at Michigan State and No. 5 Michigan, stopping 53 of 56 shots for a .946 saves percentage.

Meanwhile, women’s hockey forward Andrea Nichols received the WCHA rookie of the week award following her performances against North Dakota last weekend.

Nichols notched an assist in the 6-2 win over North Dakota on Saturday. She added two goals in the 10-1 win Sunday. It was Nichols’ first multiple-goal game of the season and her third multiple-point game of her freshman campaign.

In women’s basketball, Gophers junior Janel McCarville was named the Big Ten’s player of the week after her performances against Drake and in the Junkanoo Jam last week.

McCarville averaged 22 points and nine rebounds in the three-game span.

Her 17 points against Texas A&M and career-high 27 against USC in the Jam earned her all-tournament honors.

It is McCarville’s second career Big Ten honor.
