Minnesota’s Trust for Public Land organization is asking for public and private land owners to invest in parks and open spaces around the new Green Line light rail corridor. This would be a good way to prevent overdevelopment and improve the quality of life for residents of the Twin Cities. The University of Minnesota is not planning to help meet this goal.
We feel that the University should be leading these efforts. As an environmentally conscious institution, the University has the means to implement the innovative policies suggested by the Trust for Public Land. Creating miniature “parklets” or “greening” underutilized areas of our campus are small steps toward creating a more sustainable and livable community.
