University of Minnesota student killed in head-on collision

The student and a passenger were hit on I-94 Tuesday morning.

University of Minnesota student Diana Rojas-Martinez, 18, and her passenger Christopher Bunay, 19, were killed when Rojas-Martinez’s vehicle was struck by another driver early Tuesday morning.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said in a press release that Martinez was driving eastbound on I-94 when her vehicle was struck around 1:34 a.m.

The Associated Press reported that Martinez’s vehicle was struck by a BMW, which was traveling the wrong direction on the interstate. The driver was seriously injured.

The injuries he sustained were not life threatening, KSTP reported.

Authorities suspected the 26-year-old BMW driver was intoxicated.  The accident is still under investigation.
