Gophers clinch Big Ten title

The Minnesota baseball team clinched sole possession of the Big Ten regular-season title with a 4-3 victory over Ohio State Saturday afternoon. It is the 23rd title in the Gophers’ history.

The Gophers will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big Ten tournament, earning a first-round bye. Minnesota will face the lowest seed from the first round of games on May 27.

The Buckeyes took a 1-0 after one inning lead into Saturday afternoon after lightning postponed Friday night’s game, and extended their lead to 3-0 going into the top of the sixth inning.

The Gophers would score four unanswered runs capped off by sophomore Tip Schultz’s game-winning RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to take their first lead of the game. Junior Scott Matyas would earn the save in 1.1 innings of work.

The win also dashed any hopes Ohio State had for making the postseason.

The remaining teams for the tournament coming up next week will be No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Northwestern, No. 4 Iowa, No. 5 Purdue and No. 6 Indiana. (Bracket).
