Man admits to sexual assault near Como

The man turned himself in after being caught on camera.

A 26-year-old Lakeville man with a criminal sexual history turned himself in to police Tuesday, as the suspect in the sexual assault of a woman in the Como neighborhood August 21. Surveillance footage inside of Elmwood apartments, on Rollins Avenue SE, caught Alexander Gene Bouchier groping the 23-year-old woman in a hallway, according to the complaint. Bouchier had followed the woman from a Northeast Minneapolis bar, Minneapolis police Sgt. Jesse Garcia said . The man had a âÄúglazedâÄù look, the complaint stated. Bouchier has an extensive criminal record stemming back to 2001, including three indecent exposure charges, aggravated robbery and a receiving stolen property charge in 2008, which he is serving probation for, the complaint stated. Because of his criminal history, the fifth-degree sexual assault charge, usually a gross misdemeanor, is being charged as a felony, Garcia said. The charge could result in up to five years in prison and could include a $10,000 fine, the complaint stated. âÄúThe Hennepin County Attorney was surprised by this,âÄù Garcia said. âÄúThe fact that he had a previous history was probably taken into play.âÄù Garcia said he didnâÄôt know if this offense violated BouchierâÄôs probation. Somebody who knew Bouchier saw his photo through a press release, Garcia said, and notified police. Bouchier admitted he was responsible for the crime on August 31, and turned himself in to Hennepin County Jail the afternoon of September 1, Garcia said. Bouchier was released from Hennepin County Jail Monday evening on $20,000 bail, according to jail records.
