Halftime recognition for Whalen this Sunday at Williams

Minnesota guard Lindsay Whalen and her hometown of Hutchinson, Minn., will be recognized at halftime of the women’s basketball game on Sunday versus Indiana.

Tip off is 2 p.m. at Williams Arena.

Whalen leads the No. 23 Gophers in scoring at 21.2 points per game, second in the Big Ten.

Minnesota looks to set an all-time school single-game attendance record on Sunday as part of the “Ride the Wave to Williams” promotion. The current mark is 6,746 fans at Williams Arena against Indiana in 1993.

The first 500 fans will receive a jumbo poster of Whalen. Tickets are available by calling 612-624-8080.

ï The women’s basketball team is experiencing the best one-year turnaround in the nation thus far this season, according to research done by Big Ten officials.

Minnesota (14-3) boasts a winning percentage of .824, a mark .538 better than its final record last season.

Valparaiso (14-4) is second with a .537 differential.

Goalies share award

Minnesota’s Brenda Reinen and Jody Horak have been named the U.S. College Hockey Online Defensive Players of the Week for their performances against then No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth.

Reinen was in net for the No. 1 Gophers the first night as Minnesota won 1-0. Reinen stopped all 42 Bulldog shots on goal, her career high in her first year at Minnesota.

Horak received the starting nod in Saturday’s game and picked up where Reinen left off the night before. Horak, also a rookie goalie, had 41 of 42 possible saves to aid Minnesota in the 3-1 victory and sweep over the Bulldogs. Horak is undefeated in goal holding a 9-0-2 record in 11 starts.

The top-ranked Gophers play host to the Findlay Oilers this Saturday and Sunday at Mariucci Arena. Game time is set for 2:05 p.m. starts both days. Sunday’s game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net.
