On National Signing Day, Gophers football has received 19 National Letters of Intent as well as four signed Acceptance of Admissions forms.
Thirty-one recruits have signed with the Gophers — highlighted by 12 in-state prospects and three, ESPN 4-star recruits including lineman Isaac Hayes (Mendota Heights, MN), receiver Jamel Harbison (Charlotte, N.C.) and Minnesota’s top receiving prospect Andre McDonald (Minnetonka, MN).
Of the 31, Gophers football has signed eight defensive backs, six defensive lineman, three receivers and two quarterbacks — including decorated high school QB Philip Nelson (Mankato, MN).
“We’re not expecting any more [to sign],” a team official wrote on the Gophers’ official website.
Offensive lineman Jonah Pirsig (Blue Earth, MN) along with ESPNU top-150 recruit Isaac Hayes will front a group of three incoming offensive lineman — all from Minnesota high schools.
Pirsig was highly recruited by programs like Auburn, Ohio State and Michigan, but chose the in-state Gophers, according to ESPN.
While the majority of Big Ten member schools are offering four-year scholarships, Minnesota along with Indiana and Purdue are not.
“It’s an unwritten rule under Joel [Maturi] that we do honor our scholarships for 4 years,” athletics spokesman Garry Bowman said. “But we are not offering 4-year scholarships at this time.”
