Always willing to help

Friends of Amanda Speckien said she never hesitated to help out when they needed it.

She was one of a few people in their group of friends who had a car and was always willing to give her friends rides, said sophomore Thomas Hansen, who lived on the same floor of Bailey Hall as Speckien last year.

“Whenever I needed to go get something done, I was always asking around, and Amanda was the first one to say, ‘I’ll give you a ride,’ ” Hansen said.

Even when Speckien had a friend from her hometown visiting, she still found the time to give Hansen a ride to a job interview, he said.

“She was really unselfish,” Hansen said.

Speckien’s friends described her as a friendly, generous person who loved softball and played intramural volleyball during her first year at the University.

Her friends said Speckien was undecided about what she was going to study but had considered law. This was her second year at the University.

Sophomore David Thompson, a friend of Speckien’s said Speckien was always a welcoming, inclusive person.

“She was one of the most friendly people I’ve ever met,” said Thompson. “She was very outgoing and talked to anybody. She wouldn’t leave anybody out.”

Speckien was from Vadnais Heights. While she was a high school student at White Bear Lake Area High School, Speckien played softball and was a National Honor Society member.
