Meet the Regents

The following profiles are on the 12 members of the Board of Regents.

The board is the governing body of the University. The State Legislature appoints the regents, who serve six-year terms on a volunteer basis.

The board approves the University’s budget and sets tuition rates. It also determines the University’s mission and elects the University president.

Regents approve every major policy issue at the University.

FRANK BERMAN
At-large representative
RESIDENCE: Edina, Minn.
ELECTED: 2001
TERM EXPIRES: 2007
EDUCATION: He received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and a law degree from the University.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Berman practiced law for 35 years and was an instructor at the Academy of Accountancy. He was also the president of the Upper Midwest Region of the Jewish National Fund during the 1980s.

DALLAS BOHNSACK
2nd District
RESIDENCE: New Prague, Minn.
ELECTED: 1999, 2005
TERM EXPIRES: 2011
EDUCATION: He received a Bachelor of Science degree in plant industry from the University.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Bohnsack has been a self-employed farmer for 45 years. He was also the agricultural sales representative for Minnesota Harvestore and a sales representative for The Carlko Co.

STEVE HUNTER
At-large representative
RESIDENCE: Woodbury, Minn.
ELECTED: 2005
TERM EXPIRES: 2011
EDUCATION: He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Hunter was a graphic designer for Minneapolis, and the political action director and secretary-treasurer for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

DAVE LARSON
3rd District
RESIDENCE: Wayzata, Minn.
ELECTED: 2005
TERM EXPIRES: 2011
EDUCATION: He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Larson is an executive vice president for Cargill. He is also on the boards of the University Foundation, the Minnesota Historical Society and National History Day.

PETER BELL
5th District
RESIDENCE: Minneapolis
ELECTED: 2002
TERM EXPIRES: 2007
EDUCATION: He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in social service administration from the Metropolitan State University.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Bell was the executive vice president for corporate community relations at TCF, executive vice president for new ventures development and executive vice president for publishing and educational services at the Hazelden Foundation. He was also a consultant to Bell and Associates. He is now the chairman of the Metropolitan Council.

JOHN FROBENIUS
6th District
RESIDENCE: St. Cloud, Minn.
ELECTED: 2003
TERM EXPIRES: 2009
EDUCATION: He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Nebraska and a master’s degree in health-care administration from the University of Minnesota.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Frobenius was the co-president of the CentraCare Health System and president of St. Cloud Hospital. He was also the executive vice president and chief operating officer of St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho.

RICHARD MCNAMARA
At-large representative
RESIDENCE: Edina, Minn.
ELECTED: 2001
TERM EXPIRES: 2007
EDUCATION: He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University.
WORK EXPERIENCE: McNamara is the chief executive officer and owner of Activar Inc. He is also the director of the Dunwoody Institute, Egan Cos., chairman of Rimage Inc. and TCF. He serves on the board of directors for the University Foundation, and Woodland Container Corp.

PATRICIA SIMMONS
1st District
RESIDENCE: Rochester, Minn.
ELECTED: 2003
TERM EXPIRES: 2009
EDUCATION: He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton College and a medical degree from the University of Chicago.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Simmons was an instructor of pediatrics at the University of Minnesota and Mayo Medical School, senior associate consultant and assistant professor for the department of pediatrics and adolescent medicine at Mayo Clinic.

LAKEESHA RANSOM
At-large representative
RESIDENCE: Minneapolis
ELECTED: 2001
TERM EXPIRES: 2007
EDUCATION: She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in international business administration from Southwest State University, a master’s degree in comparative and international development education from the University of Minnesota, and a doctorate in human resource development from the University of Minnesota.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Ransom has been an admissions counselor for Southwest State University, an intern for the U.S. Department of State, a writing coordinator for High School Upward Bound, an intern for the Minnesota Higher Education Services Office, a contract trainer for the Minnesota Resource Center and is a graduate assistant for the Office of the Associate Vice President for Multicultural and Academic Affairs.

ANTHONY BARAGA
8th District
RESIDENCE: Side Lake, Minn.
ELECTED: 1999, 2005
TERM EXPIRES: 2011
EDUCATION: Baraga received a Bachelor of Arts degree in engineering from Michigan Tech, a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota.
WORK EXPERIENCE: He worked in general practice medicine for nine years and then in radiology practice from 1979 to the present. He was the president of Medical Imaging North and chief of staff at Hibbing General Hospital, Chisholm Memorial Hospital and the University Medical Center-Mesabi. He is also a retired captain of the Minnesota National Guard.

DAVID METZEN
4th District
RESIDENCE: South St. Paul, Minn.
ELECTED: 1997, 2003
TERM EXPIRES: 2009
EDUCATION: He received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education, a master’s degree in educational administration and a Doctor of Education degree in educational administration from the University.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Metzen was the district superintendent for Special School District No. 6 in South St. Paul and has been a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent. He has also been the community director of Dakota Bank, Bremer Bank, the Ronald McDonald House Charities Foundation and the American Red Cross.

CLYDE ALLEN JR.
7th District
RESIDENCE: Moorhead, Minn.
ELECTED: 2003
TERM EXPIRES: 2009
EDUCATION: He graduated from Yale University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Allen served as president, treasurer and vice president for business affairs at Concordia College in Moorhead. He served four years as commissioner of revenue for the state of Minnesota and director of research for the Minnesota Taxpayers Association. Allen was employed for 17 years as a computer specialist for Honeywell. He also worked for the National Security Agency in various states.
