Men’s golf in third place at Windon Memorial Classic

Minnesota’s men’s golf team is in third place after the first round of the Windon Memorial Classic in Chicago. The second round was suspended because of darkness. The second and final rounds will be played today at the par-71, 6,849-yard Conway Farms Golf Club.

The Gophers shot a 293 and trail tournament leader Louisiana State by six shots. Individually, sophomore All-American Bronson La’Cassie is the tournament leader after firing a 69 in round one. Junior Josh Persons carded a 72 and is tied for 10th.

Women’s golf

The Minnesota women’s golf team is in 11th place after two rounds of the Shootout at the Legends in Franklin, Ind. The Gophers shot a total of 650 to trail tournament leader Illinois State by 49 shots.

Individually, the Gophers were led by sophomore Samantha Braschler. She posted a total score of 159 and is tied for 28th. Junior Sarah Butler is tied for 43rd at 163.

Women’s hockey

Minnesota’s women’s hockey team earned the top ranking in the U.S. College Hockey Online Preseason Poll, announced Monday by the poll. The Gophers earned all 15 first-place votes for a sweep over the remaining teams.

Minnesota came off a 30-4-2 season last year and won the NCAA and Western Collegiate Hockey Association titles. Dartmouth was second in the polls, while Wisconsin was ranked third. Minnesota-Duluth was ranked sixth, while Ohio State and Minnesota State-Mankato earned votes.

The defending national champions open the 2004-2005 season on the road at WCHA foe North Dakota, Oct. 8 to 9. The two teams square off at 7:05 p.m. at the Ralph Engelstad Arena for both games.
